About Covenant High School

Covenant High School has offered an outstanding college-prep Christian high school education in Tacoma since 1992. Our students' achievement in college entrance exams have placed them in the top of all private and Christian schools in the Tacoma Pierce County area.

Statement of Faith:

Covenant High School embraces the Bible as the inerrant, infallible Word of God: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work"–2 Tim 3:16. We regard the Westminster Confession of Faith as an accurate summary of the principal truths of Scripture.

Mission Statement:

"In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Covenant High School exists to educate young people in the mind of Christ in every subject area preparing them for godly, joyful and productive service to God and man.

What makes Covenant High School Unique?

Academics founded on the the Word of God and a classical approach to education. The core of our rigorous, college-prep curriculum is rooted in the Scriptures with a thorough exploration of the classics of English literature, church history, the development of Western Civilization, the natural sciences, math, and Spanish. Electives in computers, fine arts and Latin round out the program. Thoughtful, persuasive writing is emphasized throughout the curriculum.

An Exceptionally Well Qualified Staff – 50% of the members of the Covenant High School faculty hold doctorate or master's degrees. Our highly qualified and experienced educators are committed to academic excellence and the spiritual nurture of students.

A Warm, Yet Challenging Christian Environment – The faculty members are committed to serving Christ as Savior and Lord. We view each student as a unique child of God and desire to see each one grow in the fear, love and wisdom of the Lord.

An Unswerving Dedication to the Fundamentals of Education – At Covenant High School, we have a strong commitment to the core curriculum. Fewer electives and activities are offered here than at most high schools–this is by design. We want our students to concentrate on their primary goals: to think deeply, express ideas clearly and prepare their minds for a lifetime of joyful service to God.

Are Covenant Students Well Prepared for College?

CHS graduates answer with an emphatic–yes! Our complete college prep curriculum including computers, math through calculus, foreign language and all the lab sciences, has equipped them well for success in public and private universities throughout the country. Typically, nearly all of our graduates go on to college - approximately 75% attend four-year colleges and 25% attend community college. On average, 40% of our graduating seniors are honored as Washington State Honor Awardees-an award bestowed by the Superintendent of Public Instruction on the top 10% of college-bound seniors in the state. Since 1994, the average combined verbal and math SAT scores of CHS students have placed them as a group in the top 30% of all college-bound seniors nationally. Since 1994 on the Stanford Achievement Test, our students' average results place them in the top 18% nationally.

What About Outreach Opportunities?

Our primary goal is to encourage and equip students to be servants of Christ. One great avenue for service is the Kid Reach Program. In partnership with World Vision, CHS students mentor public elementary school children. Our students share Christ's love with needy kids by tutoring and befriending them.

Are There Trips Outside the Classroom to Enhance Learning?

Field trips are an integral part of our program. Highlights include a three day excursion each fall and the climax is the Great Britain Historical Tour. The biennial historical tour of England, Scotland and Normandy, France for juniors and seniors is designed to inspire a deeper love for Christ and His Church and the men and women of faith who gave their all for Him. Students enjoy warm fellowship with believers from the United Kingdom who open their homes for part of the tour. Sites of literary, historical and cultural value are also explored.

What About Physical Education and Athletics?

Our bodies are wonderful creations of God and temples of the Holy Spirit. We seek to improve the physical fitness of each student and help to develop habits of fitness for life-long health.

Using the superb facilities of the Tacoma YMCA, students become acquainted with a variety of activities including swimming, aerobics, weight training, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, soccer and many others.

Although we do not operate a traditional interscholastic sports program, interested students are eligible to try out for public school athletic teams. CHS students compete in soccer, volleyball, tennis, swimming, basketball and track on area high school teams.

What About the Fine Arts?

Choral Music – There are three choirs at Covenant High School:  The Covenant Choir, the Chamber Choir, and the Madrigal Choir.  Through concerts, special performances, and the spring tour, the Covenant Choirs seek to extol the Lord with music and song.   The choirs are the heartbeat of the school spirit at Covenant.

Art – CHS has a state-of-the-art classroom for art education.  Students have multiple outlets for cultivating their creative talents, including the annual art show, and the art field trip.

Photography - CHS started teaching photography in 2007.  Mr. Doug Bond worked as a professional photographer for many years prior to becoming an educator.  The images on this page were taken by his students.

Drama – The drama program provides a forum for students to develop their dramatic gifts.  Students and parents alike have a great time with the annual school play.  We have presented a wide range of material, from Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde, and the performances have always been a spectacular success.
