Faculty

Mr. Richard Hannula (Principal, History, Math ) holds a B.A. in history from the University of Southern California and a master’s in education from the University of Washington. He is the author of Our Northwest Heritage, Lights in the Northwest, and Trial and Triumph: Stories from Church History. He has served as principal since Covenant’s founding in 1992.

 

Miss Eva Battle (art electives, Intro to Art, Honor Society Advisor) graduated from the University of Washington with an art major and a minor in art history. She holds a master’s in education from Seattle Pacific University. Miss Battle joined the Covenant faculty as an art teacher in 2004.

 

Mr. Douglas Bond (English, Civics, History) holds a B.A. in history from Washington Baptist College and a master’s in education from St. Martin’s College. He authored more than a dozen books including: Duncan’s War, Hostage Lands, Mr. Pipes and the British Hymnmakers, and The Betrayal. He won the Pierce County Library Foundation’s “2005 Teacher Award.” Mr. Bond has taught at Covenant since 1993.

 

Mrs. Lisa DeMass (Drama, junior & senior Speech) graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in speech communication. She worked for three years for Student Venture, a Christian outreach to teenagers. Mrs. DeMass began teaching at Covenant in 1996.

 

Mr. Richard DeMass (Bible, Chapel Director) received a B.A. from Brockport State College and a master’s from Covenant Theological Seminary. He teaches sophomore and junior Bible and serves as associate pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church. Before coming to CHS in 1994, he ministered as a staff member of Student Venture.

 

Mrs. Kathleen Hannula (Health, Study Skills, Math) holds a B.A. and a master’s in education from Central Washington University. She taught for several years for the University Place and Puyallup school districts before home schooling her own children. Mrs. Hannula joined the faculty in 2004 teaching math, health, and study skills.

 

Mrs. Tamara Hayes (Home Economics) earned a B.A. in education from Cedarville University. She taught elementary grades in two Christian schools before homeschooling her own children. Mrs. Hayes is an accomplished seamstress and she runs a part-time catering business. She also serves in the CHS main office.

 

Mr. Jerid Krulish (Bible) teaches freshman and senior Bible and serves as the assistant pastor for Faith Presbyterian Church. He holds a B.A. in English from the University of New Hampshire and a master’s from Reformed Theological Seminary. Before attending seminary, he served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard.

 

Mrs. Jane Lewellen (Math) graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and math education. She taught math in a Christian high school in Alabama for several years before moving to the Northwest. She worked as a computer programmer before joining the Covenant faculty in 2004.

 

Mr. Ralph McLin (Science, Math) earned a B.S. in biology and a master’s in biology instruction from Pacific Union College. He brought a wealth of experience teaching biology, math and general science to Covenant when he arrived in 2007. Mr. McLin also worked as a museum assistant collecting fossils and mammal specimens from across the U.S.A. and Canada.

 

Mr. Jonathan Nichols (Latin) earned a B.A. in philosophy from Wheaton College, a master’s of education from the University of Montevallo and a M.A. in philosophy from Northern Illinois University. He taught Latin in a Christian school before serving for several years as a missionary in Africa. Mr. Nichols joined the Covenant faculty in 2010.

 

Mr. Michael Pfefferle (Physics) earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Irvine. He worked as an engineer and computer programmer for Boeing and Weyerhaeuser. Mr. Pfefferle taught full-time at CHS for several years before returning to his computer programming career.

 

Mr. Jared Potter (Technology) is a graduate of the Art Institute of Seattle. Since 2003, he has worked in the software industry as a graphic and interface designer. He currently works for Microsoft as a design production leader for mobile phone applications. Mr. Potter teaches the Interface Design and Technology course.

 

Mrs. Florence Rayburn (Music, Choir) received a B.A. in music education from Drake University with a violin major and voice minor. She has played with the Waterloo, Iowa Symphony and the Aberdeen [Scotland] City Orchestra, where she conducted the Aberdeen Children’s Orchestra. Mrs. Rayburn teaches violin privately. She joined the faculty in 1992.

 

Dr. Robert S. Rayburn (Latin) holds a master’s from Covenant Theological Seminary and a doctorate in New Testament from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. His commentary on Hebrews was published in the Evangelical Commentary of the Bible. Dr. Rayburn teaches senior Latin.

 

Mrs. Julie Rust (Spanish) earned a B.A. from Prairie Bible College, a certificate of Spanish fluency from the Rio Grande Institute and a degree in education from the University of Washington. She served as a full-time missionary in Colombia, South America for three years. Mrs. Rust joined the Covenant faculty in 2010.

 

Mrs. Kim St. John (Speech, Choir) graduated from Fairmont State University with a degree in speech communications and theatre. In addition to teaching speech at Covenant High School since 2005, she has performed in theatre and coached speech forums. Mrs. St. John teaches freshman speech, sophomore speech and assists with the choir.
