Out of over 700 entries and 80 public and private schools, eight Covenant High School students were named contest winners in the Pierce County Library’s annual Our Own Expressions Teen Writing and Art Contest.
The contest awards twelve prizes in the categories of short stories and poetry. Covenant students were awarded eight of those twelve prizes.
Open to 7th through 12th graders living in or attending school in Pierce County, Our Own Expressions recognizes and celebrates creative teen talent, voice, and vision.
Each contest entry is judged in a double-blind process. Initially, each entry is reviewed by two separate pre-judges made of library staff and volunteers. Entries that continue into the next round of judging are sent to final judges who select the winning entries. These final judges are creative professionals who review written entries specifically “on the basis of originality, style, general presentation, grammar, spelling and evidence of skill commensurate with the age of the writer.”
Covenant’s English curriculum encourages students to imitate God and glorify Him through writing, by developing poetry and creative writing skills beginning in the freshman year. Students learn to analyze and imitate great poetry through the ages, and to identify and adopt key elements of great story writing in classic literature. The library contest offers an excellent opportunity for students to hone their skills and write with truth and grace.
